We encountered hang glider kites, with tourist passengers, landing on the beach at the hotel. They had jumped from Corcovado gliding to the beach. Dennis wanted to take one but was dissuaded by Helton

We were hot and sticky, Chester and Rub wanted to continue on the afternoon segment because the bus was cool. Helton had planned to take us to Sugar loaf so we did not. Chester and Ruby were unhappy about it

The Sheraton Hotel is an American style premium resort. It was beautiful and ultra luxurious inside. We inquired about a room price and we were shocked at $362 a night. This was 1993 mind you. Premium Brazilian resorts in Rio, with similar amenities, were available at about $75 to $125 a night

Obviously the Sheraton lodging was for the super rich. What was most shocking to us was that there was a favela exactly, literally, directly across the street from the hotel. No doubt some workers at the hotel were from the favela making almost nothing at all.

(A favela is a ghetto, the residents are impoverished, squatters who build ramshackle homes for themselves)
