 Historical city of Ouro Preto

We took a day trip to the beautiful city of Ouro Preto, meaning black gold in Portuguese. The family loaded up a couple of cars with American friends and off we went

Mountains in Belo Horizonte

We visited Mangabeiras Park, the Pope's Square in Belo Horizonte near the height of Mangabeiras Hill.  Beautiful views of Belo Horizonte which literally means beautiful horizon in Portuguese  Peter and Yvonne, a snake charmer, gave us a tour of the mountain tops

Trip to a cave

Ricardo, Dennis and Helton took a short trip to the small park and caves at Gruta da Cabana, just about 30 miles from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.  The trip is short but we were stopped by military police on the way for inspections. It was a bit frightening for the American.  The military rule just ended in 1985 and the regime was known for it's torture and displeasure with civil liberties.

We returned to the historic city in 1993 and the experience was far more enjoyable because the kids were older.  We could enjoy adult things like restaurants for example
