Dennis first took the car back to Milwaukee to get his remaining possessions and then travel to NYC

It was the gas crisis of 1979

Dennis headed back with Ruth to Milwaukee.  Dennis rented a U-Haul trailer in Milwaukee and then set out to New York City.  Gas was rationed during this summer and different states had differing rules to get gas

Dennis had no problem in Illinois, Indiana because his tank was full from a fill up in Milwaukee.  Ohio was not an issue because Dennis went through that state when his license plate matched their old and even fill date rules.  Dennis needed a fill up again in Pennsylvania, and worried about his "rights" because of his out of state license plate not matching the fill up rules.

But Dennis Got Lucky

The Pennsylvania rules did not apply to interstate travelers!  Dennis was able to fill up and get back to New York city without any gas availability issues! (He would have had problems in Illinois and Indiana because they did not have exemptions from the rules on the wrong fill up days)
