Our outing to the Statue of Liberty national monument and Liberty Island (The island was originally known as Bedloe's Island)
Our goal was to make it a casual tour and we were pleased that the lines were not long. The excursion took about 3 hours from the time we stood in line to get our tickets at Battery Park (using the New York Pass) to arriving back at Battery Park. We did not get off the ferry at Ellis Island. We spent about an hour and a half on the island (we had been on the platform and in the crown before - however, this was Kelsey's first time). The remainder of the time was the lines going through security at Battery park, boarding and un-boarding the ferry, and waiting for the ferries to arrive. It was a slow tourist day; we recommend allowing 4 to 5 hours or more if it is busy or if you want to make a stop at Ellis Island
Battery Park and The Battery Gardens beer garden
We took our time wandering through the The Battery Park garden. It is supported by the Battery Conservatory with self sustaining native plants and flowers. It is lovely
Our favorite relaxation was a stop at The Battery Gardens beer garden. We found it inexpensive. There seems to be two Battery Gardens restaurants reviewed around the internet. See the Battery Garden Beer Garden Menu page for our choice of an inexpensive restaurant in lower Manhattan
Seeing Miss Liberty and Liberty Island when you don't have 3 hours or more:
We recommend taking the Staten Island Ferry. The boat gives you a good view of Liberty Island, the Statue, the city skyline and New York Harbor. The ferry is free. Boats leave every 20 minutes during the day.
